    Opening Workshop

    Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, VA

    Travel and hotel costs are at the expense of the individual.

    The opening workshop is a 1½-day initial training session that introduces participants to the Leaders Edge program, helping you to define your own leadership development goals, introduces the concept of emotional intelligence, and each of the subsequent virtual sessions. The second day of the workshop is centered on launching the leadership projects. Participants are introduced to their learning team members and have the opportunity to coordinate future learning team meetings.

    This is the only required in-person piece of the Leaders Edge program, all other sessions are conducted virtually

    Virtual Session 1:  Leader Communications

    Effective communication is the baseline skill for getting work done. When stepping into a leadership role, government procurement professionals need to augment their communication skills with leadership communication attributes: messages must be communicated to the right people, at the right time and customized to their needs and desired outcomes.

    Virtual Session 2:  Leading Change

    The ability of government procurement professionals to successfully guide change in their organizations rests upon unique skills and knowledge beyond those needed in times of constancy. In this session, participants will gain awareness of their own style in encountering change and given tools, the mindsets and strategies for successful change efforts.

    Virtual Session 3:  Influence and Persuasion

    In both their organizational and volunteer roles, government procurement professionals often need to enlist the support of others to fulfill their responsibilities. However, they may lack the formal authority to direct others’ efforts. In this session, participants will learn about the importance of power as an enabler for influencing others along with strategies for planning and executing an influence approach.

    Virtual Session 4:  Coaching and Mentoring

    Coaching is not just a random conversation, it utilizes a specific set of behaviors and a defined process for evoking peak performance in others. The ability to coach others growth and performance is a critical competency for government procurement professionals interested in leadership. In this session, participants will learn about the mindsets, assumptions, and behaviors associated with coaching others toward peak performance.

    Virtual Session 5:  Leading Teams

    As work of government procurement professionals becomes increasingly complex and cross-functional, the use of teams is even more common. Yet, many teams struggle and fail to create value for their organizations. The ability to function effectively on a team and intervene if a team goes off track is critical for leadership success. In this session, participants will gain knowledge about the ingredients of highly successful teams and strategies to help improve their effectiveness.

    Virtual Session 6:  Conflict Management

    The nature of the work of government procurement professionals is rife with the potential for conflict with key stakeholders. While conflict may never be comfortable, understanding its causes and strategies to address it can relieve much of its associated stress. In this session, participants will better understand the nature of conflict, potential sources of conflict, and strategies to resolve and prevent it.

    Virtual Session 7: Strategic Thinking

    Research suggests that a key difference between a leader and a manager is the capacity to think and act from a bigger picture and long-term perspective. A key determinant of career success for many government procurement professionals is their ability to identify new opportunities to add value in both their organizational and volunteer roles. In this session, participants will be introduced to strategic thinking concepts and strategies for identifying and developing innovative ideas.
