Ebbs and Flows, IMO

DEFINITION: blog   bläɡ/noun
  1. 1.
a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Lately I have seen many inquiries to our professional discussion web pages that has led me to believe that professional procurement is at a low ebb in experience. Hopefully, where there is an ebb there is an upcoming flow. The wave action will continue. This is not bad in and of itself. It is just my observation. Now, you may ask, how did Rey come up with this gem? Or you may not ask but are curious anyhow. Well, I will tell you - IMO (in  my opinion).

As many of you, I belong to various organizations where we have the ability to exchange ideas. The exchanging of ideas is a primary mover in the development of civilizations and d
iminutively so in evolving our profession. This is a good thing and we welcome even the most mundane or innocent question.  We all have to start our knowledge somewhere and the only way I know to do that is to ask questions. Judging the degree of complexity of questions that keep popping up, I see that we have lots of uninitiated individuals in positions of much responsibility. We must be universally careful to ensure that these individuals receive the consistent and proven knowledge we have accumulated.

For the skeptics i offer the following, judging the degree of complexity of questions is rather easy for most of us. We read the questions and if an answer does not immediately pop out at we then will probably deem the question complex. On the other hand, if there is a ready and immediate solution or answer we may deem that question as simple or one with a proven solution. It is on this dichotomous tenet which I focus this blog. Simple and complex are relative. What is simple for you may be complex for someone else. What we are and should be doing in the continued improvement and growth of our profession is to insist that our terminology and body of knowledge be used by all levels of procurement professionals and those we interact with outside our profession. Respectfully and kindly, with deep knowledge of our practices and experiences we should impart our knowledge. Whenever possible we need to work and guide the less initiated towards consistency of procurement thought and action.

These things weigh heavily on my mind as I reach the sunset years of my career. I have watched how well we have evolved over the past 20+ years and hope that our proteges will be granted the strength of commitment to our profession that we have tried to capture in our ever evolving body of knowledge.
