The National Constitution Center

August 26, 2014 –  6:00 – 10:00 p.m.

An event, not to be missed.  The National Constitution Center is the first and only institution in America established by Congress to “disseminate information about the United States Constitution on a non-partisan basis in order to increase the awareness and understanding of the Constitution among the American people.” The Constitution Center brings the United States Constitution to life by hosting interactive exhibitions and constitutional conversations and inspires active citizenship by celebrating the American constitutional tradition.
Upon arrival, savor a variety of passed and served food items in the Grand Hall to satisfy your appetite after a long day of intense learning. We will enjoy exclusive access to the museum’s major exhibitions, including Freedom Rising, The Story of We the People, and Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello.  You’ll be able to purchase souvenirs at the museum gift shop as well.  Transportation will be provided to and from the event.

Public Servants doing Public Service Community Service Program

NIGP, with the support of the NIGP Business council, is seeking volunteers to support this year’s community service program.  2014’s charity is Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization that provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.  Cradles to Crayons provides these necessities free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

Volunteers will be working in the warehouse inspecting, sorting and packaging donations into “KidPacks” – a one week supply of essential children’s items tailored for specific in-need children.  Volunteers will need to be able to stand for long periods of time, and must wear close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.

Two shifts are available on Saturday, August 23: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.  Total time commitment is approximately 5 hours.  To register for this rewarding experience, complete the registration form and return it to NIGP by faxing to 703-736-9644 or emailing crawn@nigp.org.  Space is limited so sign up today! Volunteers will receive detailed information about shift assignments, departure times, etc. as the event date approaches.

NIGP is also supporting Cradles To Crayons by conducting a virtual fund drive.  If you can’t volunteer in person, consider making a donation to the charity.  Donate here.

Note to golfers:  NIGP’s Business Council will be supporting this community service program this year in lieu of a golf tournament.  We hope each of you will volunteer to give back to the Philadelphia community!

Tips

Survival Tips

  • Read the Program in advance. That way you will be able to plan each day and attend the sessions that are most beneficial to you.  (Check out all the Workshops)
  • Choose a back up session in case your first choice is full. You may want to mark your program with your choices so you can quickly identify where the alternate session is being held
  • Arrive at least five (5) minutes before the session starts to ensure you get a good seat.

  • Complete the evaluations for each session you attend and for the overall conference. Evaluations are online and a link will be emailed to you. NIGP reviews and considers these carefully, so make your voice heard!

  • Do something new. Take a session to learn about a topic you don't know anything about. Breaking out might lead to new opportunities.

  • Converse with strangers! Talk with anyone who's standing or sitting next to you. It's okay, it's expected. Networking can lead to learning about alternative procurement methods, or even better, a new friend.

  • Ask questions of the exhibitors. They're not just there to sell, but to provide information.

  • It's OK to leave. If you choose a session and find out in the first few moments that it's not for you, you are welcome to move quietly to another session. Speakers expect a certain amount of movement in the beginning of each session.

  • ENJOY! There is a whole wealth of learning, understanding and profitable ideas for you to take home.
